The wife that Odysseus left behind when he led the Greek army in the Trojan war. It’s a tale of heroines, rather than heroes. He tries to pick fights with the feras and squabbles with his mother.

Melantho also starts to like one of the suitors. Would I recommend it? One of them is Klymene, orphaned granddaughter of Odysseus’s old nurse, Eurykleia, who grows up during the years of his absence and becomes handmaid to Penelope, Odysseus’s wife.

The Iliad and the Odyssey are two of my all time favourite tales, so I am particularly drawn to any “spin offs”of the Homer epics.

You had to guess and cajole and tease the pain out of them, and it could be a tedious business. Unfortunately, not everyone believes as Penelope does, that Odysseus will return to Ithaka.

It has the classic spin of an ancient greek myth with gods and goddesses, written in a story format that made it much easier and enjoyable to read. Ithaka is an enchanting novel which explores the nature of love, faith and family. Like was it ever explained that they held a special sight of sorts? Different people have different problems, and that’s certainly true for Penelope and Telemachus. Apr 17, Anne Osterlund rated it liked it. The suitors start ruining the island of Ithaka because they wanted to marry Penelope. Klymene’s faith and courage are repeatedly tested as the suitors reek havoc in the palace daele her chances of winning Telemachus’ heart seem to grow dimmer each day.

The ending was beautiful and just what my heart desired.

Geras’s previous novel Troy, Ithaka is definitely worth reading. Geras has a wonderful knack of creating characters who walk off the page. Else rated it really liked it Shelves: It was like she wasn’t happy with the fact that her husband had returned. There is a steady, never-ending stream of suitors vying for Penelope’s hand in marriage, hoping that the mostly faithful wife will soon realize that her husband is gone forever.

She has also won prizes for her poetry and was a joint winner of the Smith Doorstop Poetry Pamphlet Award, offered by the publisher of that name. Penelope holds fast to the belief that her husband will return, even as uncouth suitors propose marriage to her and Ithaka falls into ruin.

Even though she never knew if Odysseus would return, she always stayed faithful to him. He has lost hope that Odysseus will one day return to Ithaka.


This book will temporarily dispel your boredom and take you someplace else for a couple minutes, then you can put it back down and go back to whatever you’re doing. Once I got further into the book I was very entertained and hooked. Adele G To be honest, I really thought I would hate this book. The Best Books of Meanwhile Ithxka has fallen in love with Telemachus, her mistress’s son, and must de Ithaka was a great book, that pulled you right into the setting of ancient Greece.


I think young people interested in mythology and young people interested in first loves would enjoy this read. This iyhaka tells the story of what happened at Odysseus’ home for the twenty years he was away, first fighting in the Trojan War and then his ten-year long odyssey home.

I had read her previous book Troy which I loved! Set on Ithaca during Odysseus’s absence, and centred on Klymene, handmaid to Penelope.
